Data residency
What is data residency?
Data residency is the geographic location where a supplier stores and processes your data, for example inside the European Union. For workplace software it answers where your bookings, catering orders and visitor records live, which matters for GDPR, sector rules and the expectations of your own customers.
Why it matters
Many organizations, especially in financial services, the public sector and legal, must know where personal data is stored and which countries it may be transferred to. Data residency is often a question in procurement and security reviews.
What to ask a vendor
- In which regions is customer data stored, and where are backups kept?
- Can data move between regions?
- Which sub-processors handle the data, and where?
- Does the tool copy your calendars into its own database?
Where AskCody data lives
AskCody runs on Microsoft Azure in two separate setups: European customers in EU data centres in Ireland and the Netherlands, and North American customers in the United States. Customer data stays in the region it is placed in. Exchange meeting data stays in your own Microsoft Exchange and is read on demand, not synchronized into AskCody. See AskCody ISAE 3000.
Frequently asked questions
Is data residency the same as data sovereignty?
They are related. Residency is where data is stored. Sovereignty is about which country's laws apply to it.
Where are AskCody's backups?
European backups are kept in the EU, in a second Azure region, and North American backups in the United States.
