| Q.: I want to export the packet trace file to a text file so that I can have my program work on it. Can I do that? |
| A.: Yes you can. The Save As ... function in Network Monitor let you export the packet trace, one packet per line. This produces the same output as you would by printing the packet trace to a file. For this to happen, you must choose Save as type .TXT |

| Q.: What can I see with Network Monitor? |
A.: With Network Monitor you can capture and display the network traffic exchanged by all systems on the LAN segment where Network Monitor is installed. If you prefer, you can set Network Monitor to capture only the traffic going in and out of the system where Network Monitor is installed. This mode is called non promiscuous mode and may be useful when you try to pinpoint the reasons of a problem. You can also set Network Monitor to include/exclude broadcast packets, i.e. packets sent by one system to all systems on the network.
Distinct Network Monitor also includes a Statistics module which provides very detailed information on all the sytems that are currently being monitored. |

| Q.: What can Network Monitor be used for? |
A.: There are basically three major uses:
a. It can be used by system administrators to discover network problems and bottlenecks;
b. It can be used by software developers to debug their network applications.
c. It can be used by network administrators to monitor bandwidth usage and as a security aid to find out which systems outside of the corporate network are being communicated with.
Distinct Network Monitor is packed with features designed to help software developers build and debug their network applications. |

| Q.: What is Distinct Network Monitor? |
| A.: Distinct Network Monitor is a packet sniffing program and a protocol analyzer. A packet sniffing program is a device capable of "listening" to computer conversations over a wire, i.e. a program capable of capturing the stream of data flowing between computers located on the same network. A protocol analyzer instead is a program that can decode this stream of data in human readable information. Because all streams of data are divided into packets formatted according to certain protocol specifications, a protocol analyzer can recognize these protocols and make sense of the data carried by each packet. |

| Q.: A very common question about network traffic analysis is how do I capture the traffic for analysis on a switched network? Is there something I need to do at installation? |
| A.: Switched networks are designed to stop traffic directed to a specific system from being transmitted to network ports other than the one to which the traffic is specifically directed. For this reason most switches include the ability to mirror the switch traffic from multiple ports to a single switch port know as the mirror, span or monitoring port (depending on the switch vendor). The PC running Distinct Network Monitor is then attached to this monitoring port to collect the network traffic information allowing you to then run ReportBuilder on the collected statistics to monitor the health and usage of your network. So it is not the installation of Distinct Network Monitor that is involved here it is where you connect the PC that it running it that will determine what traffic is visible. |

| Q.: At installation I got "Error 1904.Module D:\Program
Files\Distinct\Monitor\library\3DChartM.ocx failed to register." |
A.: The first thing to check is whether OpenGL runs at all on this machine. For this purpose just run a Microsoft OpenGL screen saver (from the
Display properties). This module is no longer used in version 5.
Suggestions that will normally solve the problem.
1. Install the latest version of DirectX - this installation
update many of the display specific dlls and DirectDraw as well which
OpenGL depends on.
2. Install the latest service pack for Win2K.

| Q.: I am trying to install DNM 4.x and it seems to hang.
|
A.: This problem is related to the installer in use. To try solving it, open the Task Manager, kill IDriver.exe and the setup.exe that you are running.
Also check if there are multiple msiexec.exe in the task manager. Try to
kill all but one (that can not be killed). Now try installing again. |
