Product: Distinct Network MonitorTopic: Network Segment Traffic AnalysisLast updated: 8/17/2007

Q.: how do I capture the network segment traffic for analysis on a switched network?
A.: Because switched networks are designed to avoid the delivery of packets directed to a specific system from being broadcast on the network, most modern switches include the ability to mirror the switch traffic from multiple ports to a single switch port know as the mirror, span or monitoring port (depending on the switch vendor). The PC running Distinct Network Monitor is then attached to this monitoring port to collect the network traffic information allowing you to then run ReportBuilder on the collected statistics to monitor the health and usage of your network.
