| Q.: A very common question about network traffic analysis is how do I capture the traffic for analysis on a switched network? Is there something I need to do at installation? |
| A.: Switched networks are designed to stop traffic directed to a specific system from being transmitted to network ports other than the one to which the traffic is specifically directed. For this reason most switches include the ability to mirror the switch traffic from multiple ports to a single switch port know as the mirror, span or monitoring port (depending on the switch vendor). The PC running Distinct Network Monitor is then attached to this monitoring port to collect the network traffic information allowing you to then run ReportBuilder on the collected statistics to monitor the health and usage of your network. So it is not the installation of Distinct Network Monitor that is involved here it is where you connect the PC that it running it that will determine what traffic is visible. |

| Q.: At installation I got "Error 1904.Module D:\Program
Files\Distinct\Monitor\library\3DChartM.ocx failed to register." |
A.: The first thing to check is whether OpenGL runs at all on this machine. For this purpose just run a Microsoft OpenGL screen saver (from the
Display properties). This module is no longer used in version 5.
Suggestions that will normally solve the problem.
1. Install the latest version of DirectX - this installation
update many of the display specific dlls and DirectDraw as well which
OpenGL depends on.
2. Install the latest service pack for Win2K.

| Q.: I am trying to install DNM 4.x and it seems to hang.
|
A.: This problem is related to the installer in use. To try solving it, open the Task Manager, kill IDriver.exe and the setup.exe that you are running.
Also check if there are multiple msiexec.exe in the task manager. Try to
kill all but one (that can not be killed). Now try installing again. |

| Q.: I have all the service packs installed but still when I try to install DNM it complains that I do not have the latest version of the Windows Installer.
How is this possible?
|
A.: When a package that uses an older Windows Installer is installed, it replaces the already installed Windows Installer. So it is possible that some package you installed on your system replaced the newer Windows Installer with an older one without your knowledge. To correct this download the latest Windows Installer from Microsoft's web site. Following are the links for windows installer for win9x and NT/2000.

| Q.: My admin just installed DNM on W2k and went away. Now I am logged in
as a normal user but I am unable to bind to the adapter. Why?
|
A.: You need to reboot your machine.
In general if the admin has not run DNM once after installation, you need to restart the system. Basically the driver
needs to be loaded on W2k/XP/NT and a normal user cannot load the driver.
The driver gets loaded automatically after a reboot if the installation was done by the admin.
