Q.: A very common question about network traffic analysis is how do I capture the traffic for analysis on a switched network? Is there something I need to do at installation?
A.: Switched networks are designed to stop traffic directed to a specific system from being transmitted to network ports other than the one to which the traffic is specifically directed. For this reason most switches include the ability to mirror the switch traffic from multiple ports to a single switch port know as the mirror, span or monitoring port (depending on the switch vendor). The PC running Distinct Network Monitor is then attached to this monitoring port to collect the network traffic information allowing you to then run ReportBuilder on the collected statistics to monitor the health and usage of your network. So it is not the installation of Distinct Network Monitor that is involved here it is where you connect the PC that it running it that will determine what traffic is visible.
