Q.: I want to export the packet trace file to a text file so that I can have my program work on it. Can I do that?
A.: Yes you can. The Save As ... function in Network Monitor let you export the packet trace, one packet per line. This produces the same output as you would by printing the packet trace to a file. For this to happen, you must choose Save as type .TXT

Q.: What can I see with Network Monitor?
A.: With Network Monitor you can capture and display the network traffic exchanged by all systems on the LAN segment where Network Monitor is installed. If you prefer, you can set Network Monitor to capture only the traffic going in and out of the system where Network Monitor is installed. This mode is called non promiscuous mode and may be useful when you try to pinpoint the reasons of a problem. You can also set Network Monitor to include/exclude broadcast packets, i.e. packets sent by one system to all systems on the network.
Distinct Network Monitor also includes a Statistics module which provides very detailed information on all the sytems that are currently being monitored. |

Q.: What is Distinct Network Monitor?
A.: Distinct Network Monitor is a packet sniffing program and a protocol analyzer. A packet sniffing program is a device capable of "listening" to computer conversations over a wire, i.e. a program capable of capturing the stream of data flowing between computers located on the same network. A protocol analyzer instead is a program that can decode this stream of data in human readable information. Because all streams of data are divided into packets formatted according to certain protocol specifications, a protocol analyzer can recognize these protocols and make sense of the data carried by each packet.
