| Product: Distinct Network Monitor | Topic: general | Last updated: 3/25/2008 | | | | Q.: What is Distinct Network Monitor? | | A.: Distinct Network Monitor is a packet sniffing program and a protocol analyzer. A packet sniffing program is a device capable of "listening" to computer conversations over a wire, i.e. a program capable of capturing the stream of data flowing between computers located on the same network. A protocol analyzer instead is a program that can decode this stream of data in human readable information. Because all streams of data are divided into packets formatted according to certain protocol specifications, a protocol analyzer can recognize these protocols and make sense of the data carried by each packet. |
